Summary

Following the wild success of The Big Book of Bugs and The Big Book of BeastsThe Big Book of the Blue is the third installment in Yuval Zommer’s beloved series。 Alongside everything the young oceanographer needs to know, Zommer’s charming illustrations bring to life some of the slipperiest, scaliest, strangest, and most monstrous underwater animals。

The book opens by explaining how different types of animals are able to breathe and survive underwater, and the different families to which they belong。 Subsequent pages are dedicated to specific creatures, including sea turtles, whales, sharks, stingrays, and seahorses, and show varied life in specific habitats, such as a coral reef or deep sea bed。 The Big Book of the Blue also explores the underwater world thematically, looking at animals in danger, learning how to spot creatures at the beach, and discovering how to do our part to save sea life。 Beautiful and filled with fascinating facts, young, curious readers won’t be able to tear their eyes away from the page。

This is a fabulous non-fiction picture book about all the weird and wonderful inhabitants of the sea! The Big Book of the Blue is a non-fiction book, written by Yuval Zommer。 Children will need to have some knowledge of the sea and our oceans to understand this book, though the illustrations hold the attention of an early reader and help the child to move the narrative forward without adult help。 I originally chose to read this book as it was big and beautifully illustrated, which is something that children are renowned for doing when choosing a book to read (an eye-catching, colourful front cov The Big Book of the Blue is a non-fiction book, written by Yuval Zommer。 Children will need to have some knowledge of the sea and our oceans to understand this book, though the illustrations hold the attention of an early reader and help the child to move the narrative forward without adult help。 I originally chose to read this book as it was big and beautifully illustrated, which is something that children are renowned for doing when choosing a book to read (an eye-catching, colourful front cover, or an interesting title and this book has both)。 The first page grabs the readers attention again by giving them a task to do throughout reading the book (“can you find the same sardine 15 times in this book?”) and for children, I can imagine that this type of eye-spy game would be a good enough reason to elicit me to read-on, if I was not astonished by the outset。 Meanwhile, this non-fiction book should be credited for its ease of access; a contents page with the different topics covered gives children the ability to exercise their autonomy to choose what they want to learn about, ranging from krill to coral reef fish。 From my research as a trainee teacher, I feel that giving children autonomy over their reading can encourage them to read for pleasure (RfP) later on in their reading comprehension development and this book is a model example of exactly that。 Another essential point is taken from pages 6-7, whereby the author provides the reader with a poster of ‘Ocean Families’, explaining what mammals, reptiles, fish, crustaceans and molluscs are – all different animals that live in the ocean。 Non-fiction books are notorious for being factual and I feel this encapsulates exactly what is expected from such book; the author hasn’t dulled down any terminology to make it more suitable for the younger reader which I like, as it only adds another level to their conceptual understanding and linguistic development。 Equally important, the author moves from factual and correct, to child-focused and likens some of the aquariums to ‘fish schools’ and ‘families’, which in my opinion, is an effective way of easing any uncertainties children may have about the ocean or animals within it, which is an appropriate and unbiased approach for teaching children about the real-world we live in。 Lastly, credit should go to the author for the illustrations and thought that has gone into each page, for example, pages 18-19 are concerned with ‘Jellyfish’, which comes under the heading ‘glowing in the murky depths’ and therefore, Zommer has illustrated this double-page spread with black to represent the ‘murky depths’, but the jellyfish are vibrant and glowing。 Moreover, this is seen again on pages 26-27 ‘Seals’, whereby the illustrations are glaciated and blue – illustrations help the early reader to associate objects and actions with words, which helps the child to begin comprehending the words and move onto becoming a fluent reader。 。。。more

The Big Book of the Blue is the third book in Yuval Zommer’s ‘The Big Book of’ series。 It follows on from the publication of The Big Book of Bugs and The Big Book of Beasts and readers are in for yet another treat。 If you are not familiar with Zommer’s work and ‘The Big Book’ series you are seriously missing out。 Like the previous books in the series, it is full of fascinating facts, questions and answers。Ever wondered…Is a seahorse a horse? Is a jellyfish made from jelly? Why does an octopus need eight arms? Why does a crab run sideways? How many tins can one tuna fill? Well, The Big Book of the Blue has the answers to all of these questions and more。The Book of the Big Blue is produced across twenty nine double page spreads。 Each double page spread focuses on a specific topic or creature and is laid out in an inviting way for the reader。 The pages are colourful and are packed full of stunning illustrations that are detailed and vibrant。 Each double page spread begins with a heading and is supplemented by an interesting question that immediately grabs the reader’s attention。 Subheadings are scattered across the page and are accompanied by facts and informative chunks of text。 Zommer’s clever use of puns adds humour to the book which readers will delight in。 Get ready for fin-tastic fish , sss-wimming snakes and ink-teresting octopus facts。Zommer also pays attention to the environmental issues that the oceans face and details the actions of humans that are causing the problems。 I sincerely hope all readers, children and adults, pay close attention to this part as we can actively help to look after our oceans and the wonderful creatures that call them home。My favourite double page is the the deep dive page where the reader is treated to a dive into the ocean and an examination of what is going on at different depths - fascinating stuff。 And when all the information gets too much, there are fabulous ‘can you find’ activities。 Readers are challenged to find specific things within individual spreads such as finding something that does not belong in the dolphin habitat (plastic litter)。 There is also a more generic challenge in which readers are given the task of finding the sneaky sardine who has found his way into fifteen of the spreads。This feels like a proper grown-up non-fiction book and young readers will no doubt love that there is a contents, an index and a glossary that comes in the form of ‘Fishy Phrases’ so young ocean explorers can speak like an expert。The book is a fabulous way for children to learn about the wonders of the ocean and the creatures within it。 It is a brilliant book for any budding oceanographer and will be devoured by children who want to find out about everything that lives in the ‘big blue’。 The book is published as a large format coffee-table sized book with thick pages that will hold up to endless hours of exploration。Recommended for 6+。 。。。more

This book holds marvellous illustrations that take you into the water and let you discover the variety of creatures that live there。 Some are in double page landscape, some in double page portrait。 Very cleverly done。Each page starts with an introductory question。 Some of them I found more satisfactory than others。Apart from that, I loved chasing for the Sardine through the pages。 This is such an easy and satisfactory way of getting to know your book entirely。 Very well done。

The illustrations are amazing, however there’s not too much info here。 Some spreads have only 4 unique facts about the animal。 Others mention facts but don’t explain, like the page that says sea turtles don’t get stung by jellyfish。。。 No explanation。 My daughter asked why and of course I looked it up。 But I wished the book had said。 Overall, a gorgeous book that’s been hyped a lot, but lacks in thoroughness。 We liked Life On Earth: Ocean better。
